Speedway Information
Speedway is a town in Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population
was 12,881 at the 2000 census. Speedway is the home of the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway, from which the town derives its name, and is completely surrounded by
the city of Indianapolis itself.
As of the census of 2000, there were 12,882 people, 6,151 households, and
3,278 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,047.0/km
(2,708.9/mi). There were 6,636 housing units at an average density of 539.4/km
(1,395.6/mi). The racial makeup of the town was 83.16% White, 11.89% African
American, 0.28% Native American, 1.61% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from
other races, and 1.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race
were 2.63% of the population.
There were 6,151 households out of which 24.5% had children under the age of 18
living with them, 36.6% were married couples living together, 12.5% had a female
householder with no husband present, and 46.7% were non-families. 39.4% of all
households were made up of individuals and 13.5% had someone living alone who
was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.08 and the
average family size was 2.78.
In the town the population was spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 10.1%
from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65
years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there
were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,713, and the median income
for a family was . Males had a median income of $36,756 versus $26,954 for
females. The per capita income for the town was $21,468. About 5.6% of families
and 8.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.7% of those
under age 18 and 9.5% of those age 65 or over.
