Southport Information
Southport is a city in Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2000 census. It was founded in the 19th century as a place of loading, unloading, embarkation, and debarkation by teamsters driving goods north to Indianapolis, making it a true "port", even though it is completely landlocked.
Southport has a small area called Downtown Southport. It is located on
Southport Road between Madison Avenue and McFarland Road. Downtown consists of
antique shops, furniture stores, decorator shops, Chinese restaurant,
dry-cleaners, pizza delivery and the city famous Long's Bakery. A dance studio,
Christian bookstore/cafe, nail salon, electrical/mechanical company, day spa,
dog groomer, automotive repair, photographer and property management firm are
also located in Downtown Southport. City offices are located north of Southport
Rd. at 6901 Derbyshire Rd. and are adjacent to the City Park. A shelter house
(activity center) in the City Park can be rented out for parties or get
together. The shelter house is also the home of non-profit, PSCS:Perry Senior
Citizens Services.
During Christmas time, the city always puts up different decorations under the
street lamps. Over the summer, the city displays American Flags on all utility
poles throughout the city, overseen by a group of dedicated volunteers. During
the weeks before Halloween, a popular 'Haunted House' is hosted on the grounds
of the Southport Little League Ball Park.
Local Government is accomplished with help from an elected Mayor,
Clerk-Treasurer and Common Council of 4 district representatives and 1 at-large
representative.
The GSBA (Greater Southport Business Alliance) represents a network of
entrepreneurs, professionals, business owners, and managers whose mission is to
guide, inspire, and promote the best interests of the economy and quality of
life for the greater Southport area.
Members have aligned in an effort to collaborate, communicate and cooperate with
other Southport stakeholders to build economic opportunities and a strong
community for all.
